We all know at least one friend or family member who is on the keto diet.
Everywhere we turn there are more keto-friendly foods popping up, and many restaurants have also jumped on board to satisfy their carb-conscious clientele. So what is all of the hype about and is it something that could be beneficial to you?
Jeannie S. came to us a few months ago with a scenario that have heard countless times: she had tried “every diet’ and still couldn’t lose weight. She was considering the ketogenic diet that many of her coworkers were on, and most with good success. Having owned nutrition stores for 20 years I remember well the popularity of the Atkins diet in the early 2000’s, which was a resurgence of the diet designed by Cardiologist Dr. Robert Atkins in the early 70’s. The details vary slightly (the true keto diet is higher in fat and lower in protein than the Atkins Diet), but the principle is the same: eat a diet very low in carbohydrates and high in fat that will force the body into ketosis – the metabolic state in which fat provides most of the fuel and energy for the brain and body.
After discussing exercise and dietary strategies, as well as key supplements that would help her achieve and maintain ketosis, Jeannie decided to give it a go. In the last 90 days she has lost 30 pounds and claims to have more energy than ever, but that’s not the end of the story. Jeannie has been able to reduce–and may one day be able to get off–her insulin and blood pressure medication. Her overall health has dramatically improved and she has even added small amounts of healthy/low-glycemic carbohydrates to her diet a couple days per week.
Some of the supplements that Jeannie used were Allmax Keto Cuts, which contain BHB Salts to help to get and stay in ketosis as well as increase energy and focus. She also used Power Pak Electrolyte packets from Trace Minerals, and a very low carbohydrate protein powder from Dymatize, the Iso-100.
